Job Description

SUMMARY: 

The position is a highly visible Supervisory position responsible for the for overall HSE performance of the Building Products Divisions manufacturing facilities in the United States.  Serves as an extension of the corporate office and will support the overall objectives of the corporate office with direct reports and facility managers and staff.  Supervises a high performance team of HSE professionals to support the overall needs of the manufacturing facilities, HSE department and company goals and objectives.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following and other duties as assigned.

  • Assesses organizational needs and directs subordinates to facilitate support excellence to manufacturing facilities to ensure compliance and drive superior HSE performance. Monitor key performance indicators and incidents and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Champion and facilitate support for initiatives and directives.
  • Provide analysis of data and make recommendations to improve compliance and performance.
  • Develop policies, procedures and work products to ensure compliance and improve performance.
  • Audit facilities and be able to lead audits for conformance to all Federal, State, Corporate and Plant safety policies.
  • Make recommendations for improvement of procedures, practices and activities which prevent the effective execution of the plant HSE programs.
  • Lead and conduct hazard assessments, make recommendations, assist in development of solutions and follow up through closure.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects as assigned and collaborates with HSE team from start to finish to achieve department and business unit goals with minimal oversight.
  • Conduct/facilitate root cause analysis of incidents and support plants in development of corrective actions.
  • Consult with HSE professionals and plant managers on a routine basis to facilitate and support individual plant needs to achieve goals and develop the safety culture.
  • Review engineering projects and conduct appropriate reviews of proposed changes in processes or equipment to insure compliance with HSE regulations and best practices including ergonomics. 
  • Get involved; guide and coach plant personnel with the management of workers compensation claims to assure injured employees are properly cared for and claims are effectively managed. 
  • Work with plants to assure employee safety orientation and training is completed and is effective.
  • Lead and facilitate interaction between other HSE staff, plant personnel and governmental agencies or officials during inspections, permit applications and assist with communication and resolution of potential issues.
  • Train and coach hourly, salary and management personnel at plant sites to elevate the safety culture and improve organizational knowledge and conformance to policies, procedures and compliance with regulations.
  • Analyze incident data and provide feedback and direction to site to help them focus on key areas for improvement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively up and down through the organization. Create a positive work environment. 
  • Conduct performance appraisals with direct reports.
  • Manage performance issues with direct reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:      

To perform this job successfully, an individual must excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Experience supervising and managing people. 
  • Ability to gather data, compiles information, and prepares reports.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to executives and non-technical personnel. Knowledge of federal, state and local HSE regulations, protocols, and/or procedures
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols Ability to develop and deliver training effectively Skill in using computers and knowledge with Microsoft Office Suites
  • Must be willing to travel 50% or more of the time. Be driven by achieving excellence 5 to 10 years safety experience in a manufacturing or chemical environment
  • Environmental and DOT experience is a plus

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

BS Degree in Safety Engineering and 5 to plus years’ experience.  Knowledgeable in Federal, State, fire safety, ANSI Standards, and general Workers Compensation Laws.  Possess assertive oral and written communication skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk or hear and taste or smell.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop and kneel.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed an office environment but will also be exposed to a plant environment including moving mechanical parts and extreme heat.  The employee could be exposed to high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the plant work environment is usually loud.
