Job Description

SUMMARY

The Senior Environmental Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of the specified environmental programs and projects for the Complex.  Develops, implements, and maintains systems to ensure all requirements are consistently met, including reporting, notification, test data management and QA.  The Senior Environmental Engineer is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate submission of environmental reports to the agencies.  In addition, the Senior Environmental Engineer provides support to the other positions within the department as needed to ensure efficient operation of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as host for inspectors and other agency representatives to ensure compliance of environmental programs.
  • Develops and executes strategy to resolve issues arising from air quality, water quality, and hazardous waste compliance inspections.
  • Resources Complex by providing expert guidance associated with environmental regulations.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains those standard operating procedures and/or management systems needed to provide sustainable guidance and maximize compliant operation.
  • Initiates and actively participates in investigations and tracks action items.
  • Actively participates in PHA’s, PSSR’s, and incident investigations.
  • Prepares training modules and conducts training in environmental program requirements.
  • Conducts internal environmental inspections of facilities and communicates findings to management so corrective actions can be taken.
  • Coordinates contract staff and other activities at the Complex to comply with environmental regulations and requirements.
  • Develops and executes plans for implementation of projects resulting from capital budget, incident investigations, and compliance inspections.

  • This role does not have direct or indirect supervision responsibilities of Westlake personnel.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or Chemical Engineering or Master’s Degree in other Engineering field coupled with thirteen years of environmental compliance experience and environmental regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of environmental control procedures, standards, and test procedures.
  • Ability to independently research/resolve problems or issues in a timely manner
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) in a corporate environment
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment
  • Strong computer skills - Proficiency with Windows based software (specifically Excel, Word and PowerPoint)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office.  Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.  May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators.  Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
