Job Description

Westlake Chemical is offering an opportunity to apply your experience and skills asn a Process Engineer I.  This position is based in Sulphur, La. at our Poly, Ethylene and Olefins (PE&O) site.  This FLSA status for this position is exempt and will report directly to the Engineering Superintendent.  The following is a general list of routine job duties, responsibilities, and requirements which are intended as a guide to enable the Process Engineer I to better understand the various situations particular to the assigned job. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides process engineering support for various plant capital projects from conception through start-up.  Prepare Simulations in ASPEN and HYSIS to aid in process design.  Prepare Scope of Work for new capital projects.  Function as Project Sponsor on specific capital projects.
  2. Prepare, participate, and follow-p Process Hazard Analysis/Level of Protection Analysis (PHA/LOPA).  Share in the PHA recommendation assignments.  Prepare information for management of change requirements.
  3. Assist in developing new and updating P&ID's, Site Standards (procedures), and heat and material balances.  Provide hydraulic calculations to support P&ID development.
  4. Support studies to improve operating efficiency, profitability, quality, safety, and solve technical issues in operating units.
  5. Provides day-to-day technical assistance in the plant as requested.  As a minimum, attend the morning meeting of the assigned area to maintain communication.
  6. Analyzes and trouble shoots specific plant operating problems as requested by the Production Unit and agreed to by the Process Manager.
  7. Optimizes unit operations as assigned.  Supports plant shutdowns or be available for call out to support operating unit with strong technical input.
  8. Prepare detailed calculations in various engineering programs to size equipment for process design.
  9. Participate and document Westlake Incident Reviews (WIR) as assigned.  Complete action items for incident reviews as assigned.
  10. Provides information/calculations to support budgeting and cost control efforts.
  11. Ensure all activities are done in a manner that respects safety and the environment and/or meets quality objective.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering with an acceptable academic record  Prefer experience in Ethylene or Styrene Technology.
  • A current, valid Transportations Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.
