Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide Targeted Manufacturing Assistance

  • Maintain ongoing assistance to Westlake’s Longview and Lake Charles high pressure polyethylene operations, including troubleshooting of chronic and acute manufacturing problems
  • Work with Technologists and Manufacturing to identify, develop, and organize plant trials, special tests, and fundamental studies to improve product quality, support product development, as well as optimize equipment or procedures
  • Assist in engineering evaluations for safety and technology issues associated with process modification, improvements, or additions.
  • Support Westlake’s Longview, TX and Lake Charles, LA high pressure technology/operations utilizing telecommunication and travel as needed
  • Assist Operations with temporary resource assignments created by urgent needs or high priority projects

Support Technology Objectives

  • Represent Technology in matters of processes and engineering for high pressure polyethylene technology and operations.
  • Develop proposals for optimizing equipment performance or developing new products  according to the Technology goals for Research & Support
  • Coordinate cross-functional project activities with Research & Support, other areas of Technology, Operations, and Site Engineering personnel
  • Participate in the Technology Group’s Leadership Team meeting

Support Westlake’s Technology Base

  • Contribute to Westlake’s technical knowledge of high pressure polyethylene process technology and resins
  • Assist the PE Commercial Team in the evaluation and understanding of competitive resins and technology
  • Assist in the development and implementation of plans to acquire new expertise or knowledge in key technology areas
  • Capture and document technical learning in an appropriate manner
  • Assist in ensuring that Westlake discoveries are identified and properly protected in support of Westlake intellectual property strategies

Support Evaluation of Prospective Process Technologies

  • Assist in the selection, evaluation of feasibility, and valuation of prospective process modifications or new process technology
  • Assist in estimating capital projects or operating costs associated with implementation of  new technology
  • Interact with potential equipment and technology vendors to  keep current on their latest offerings

Coordinate with Technology Partners

  • Establish and maintaining relationships with select technology partners
  • Assist in identifying and assessing high pressure polyethylene technology that may be available for licens

Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering (or related degree) desired with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in process improvement or a polymer research role. PhD in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry with relevant experience may be considered. 
  • Experience working in process engineering and/or plant operations for high pressure polyethylene is highly desired.
