Job Description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

  • Work with Westlake’s Technology group to maintain and ensure the Applications, Physical Testing, and Analytical/Characterization laboratory equipment will be able to properly support Westlake’s growing customer base as well as the needs posed by our QA/QC departments.

  • Provide mechanical and operational support for strategic customer trials, product development, market development, and technical investigation work within the polyethylene Technology laboratories.

  • Assist with development and execution of the Technology Department’s capital projects by:
    • Developing proposals for optimizing equipment performance,
    • Assessing the feasibility and valuation of prospective new technology and equipment improvements,
    • Interacting with potential equipment and technology vendors to keep up to date with industry trends and advancements, and
    • Working with OEM’s, the plant project group, as well as engineering contractors to ensure laboratory projects are properly scoped and incorporate all the requirements posed by relevant safety and operational standards.

  • Provide responsive troubleshooting for Technology Lab equipment and project problems by:
    • Investigating obsolete component replacements
    • Reviewing historical data trends for potential solutions
    • Translating Lab Technician operational knowledge into engineering solutions

  • Participate on teams aimed at improving the collection and utility of the Application and REX labs extrusion process data via
    • Data historian maintenance/optimization/upgrades
    • PLC interface modifications/tuning
    • Improved user interfaces for downloading data for analysis

  • Participate in Application & REX Lab experiments to develop fundamental knowledge of polyethylene conversion operations

  • Assist drafting department with digitizing Technology department drawings by:
    • Consolidating all physical copies within a controlled environment
    • Ensuring that only the most recent revisions are available for maintenance
    • Field verify and update critical drawings

  • Assist Tech Lab Group Leader with review, development, and updates of operational and safety procedures for major laboratory equipment.  Perform routine safety reviews and audits to continually drive risk out of the operations.

  • Work with technicians and engineers on training programs to ensure ultimate flexibility of the workforce within Technology’s Labs.

  • Assist Management with special projects, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. Degree is required.  Bachelor's degree in Engineering is preferred, but relevant experience considered.  Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.  Past experience with polyethylene, polymer converting equipment, and/or managing small projects is preferred.
